Dr. Hart received his bachelors degree in music education from Metropolitan State College in Denver, and received both his masters and doctoral degrees in music from the university of Northern Colorado. Dr. Hart also did additional graduate work in music at the university of Colorado, the university of Northern Texas, Indiana University, and the Eastman school of music. Additionally, he studied conducting with the world renowned conductor, Antonia Brico. Dr. Hart taught music for 26 years six years in public school and 20 years at the college university level, including 10 years at Adam State University from 1990 to 2000. After leaving ASU, Dr. Hart spent 17 years in college administration and retired in 2017 after serving as president of Morgan community college in Fort Morgan, Colorado for nine years. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Hart served as executive producer and music supervisor for a documentary, “Glenn Miller: The Birthplace of His Music” based on a research paper, Dr. Hart had written about Glenn Miller’s musical experience as a Colorado high school student from 1918 to 1921. The documentary was broadcast on PBS in December 2016 after his official retirement, Dr. Hart returned to the San Luis Valley, where he has family roots going back for generations. In 2019 he accepted an appointment to serve as interim president for Trinidad State College serving both Trinidad and the San Luis Valley. He is currently conducting the SLV community band and the Alamosa Ragtime Band.
The SLV Community Band is an important part of the musical culture of Colorado’s San Luis Valley that has a tradition of excellence dating back to the approximate time of the founding of the city of ALAMOSA in 1878. The band is made up of volunteer musicians throughout the San Luis Valley and is open to any musician with concert band experience. No auditions are necessary. Current membership includes middle school and high school musicians through retired professional musicians/music educators the band rehearses weekly at Ortega middle school on Thursday evenings from 7 PM to 8:30 PM And perform numerous concerts each year at various venues throughout the San Luis Valley.
